About this piece
A military commission of the United States Army issued under President Andrew Johnson, an engraved War Department form completed in manuscript, dated Washington, March 5, 1867. It appoints John F. Chandler Quartermaster with the rank of Major, to rank from January of that year.
The printed form is headed "President of the United States of America" in a curving title, above a large eagle with outspread wings and a ribbon in its beak. The text opens "To all who shall see these presents, greeting", and the lower margin is filled by an engraved trophy of furled flags, cannon, drums and arms. The sheet is signed by Andrew Johnson and countersigned "By the President" by Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Red docket notes at the upper left record the register entry: "Recorded, Volume 18, page 224, Adjutant General's Office, March 5, 1867", and the sheet bears the signature of the Adjutant General, Edward D. Townsend.
The sheet is marked "Official Copy", a retained War Department record of the appointment rather than the commission delivered to the officer.
