About this piece

Four South American parrots on one hand-colored plate from The Book of Birds, Edited and Abridged from the Text of Buffon by M. Achille Comte, with illustrations by Victor Adam, translated by Benjamin Clarke and published by R. Tyas of London around 1845. The plate is numbered 156 at the foot.

The upper pair, lettered "L'Ara rouge" and "L'Ara vert", are two macaws on a single curved branch: a scarlet bird with yellow and blue wings and a long blue tail, and a green one with a yellow chest and red-brown wing, partly hidden in foliage. The lower pair, lettered "L'Amazone à tête blanche" and "L'Aouraou-Couraou", sit on perches of crossed sticks. One is a blue-green parrot with a pale head, the other a green parrot with a yellow head and red-patched wing.

The numbered caption in the old description identifies the lower right bird as the Bouraoucon. The color work gives the sheet the bright finish typical of these small Victorian editions of Buffon.
