About this piece

A pair of black-necked grebes, a color lithograph lettered "Podiceps californicus", from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America", published between 1866 and 1869. The sheet is lettered as drawn from nature by Elliot and printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.

The two birds float on a quiet pond in breeding plumage, with dark necks and backs, chestnut flanks, white underparts and fans of golden ear plumes behind the eye. Lily pads cover the water around them, a white water lily is in bloom at the center and a closed bud stands at the lower left, and tall reeds rise along the far bank.

The work appeared between 1866 and 1869 and set out to figure North American species not previously illustrated. Only 200 copies were printed, and the lithography was by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.
