About this piece
Four Caribbean islands, an original set of four engraved maps of St. Christopher's (St. Kitts) with Nevis, Antigua, the Virgin Islands and Tobago, published in London in 1818 for Bryan Edwards' History of the British West Indies. Each sheet carries its own engraved title.
The St. Christopher's map shows the parishes, settlements, churches, forts, roads and the mountainous interior, with an inset at the upper right of the neighboring island of Nevis, including Charlestown. Antigua is shown with its parishes, forts and harbors: St. John's, English Harbour, Falmouth and Parham are named. The Virgin Islands map covers St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, St. Croix and Anegada and extends toward St. Martin, Anguilla, St. Barthélemy, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Christopher's. The Tobago map shows the mountainous interior, rivers and bays, with Scarborough, Great Courland Bay and Man of War Bay named.
Bryan Edwards (1743 to 1800) was a Jamaica planter, merchant and Member of Parliament, and a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1794. He defended the plantation system and opposed the campaign against the slave trade.
