About this piece
Antilles et Amérique Centrale, a map of the Caribbean and Central America "dressée sous la direction de E. Cortambert, 1872", published in Paris by L. Hachette & Cie. The sheet is a color-printed engraving, lettered "Gravé par Erhard" with the engraver's address, and a lithographer's imprint at the foot.
The map runs from the Gulf of Mexico and Florida in the north to Venezuela in the south, and from Yucatán and Guatemala across to the Lesser Antilles. Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico are shown in relief shading, and the Bahamas are labeled as the "Iles Lucayes". Three insets at the upper right give larger plans of Guadeloupe, Saint Martin and Martinique. A legend at the lower left uses color to mark the Spanish, English, French, Danish and Dutch possessions.
The plate carries a plate number at the upper right, showing that it comes from a bound geography atlas. The colored outlines make it a useful record of the colonial divisions of the Caribbean in the early 1870s.
