About this piece
The West Indies in a color lithograph map, plate 96 of The Times Atlas, prepared by the Edinburgh Geographical Institute and published by John Bartholomew and Company in 1922. The title "The West Indies" is set across the top, and the plate number appears at the upper right.
The map covers the whole Caribbean Basin, from the coasts of Mexico and Central America at the west to the Lesser Antilles at the east, and from Cuba and the Bahamas south to Venezuela. The land is shown in layered colors that run from green at sea level to brown at the highest elevations, with the sea in pale blue and a small elevation key at the lower left. The Greater Antilles of Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Cuba, the Leeward and Windward Islands and part of the Bahama Islands are all named.
Inset maps along the top and bottom show the Panama Canal, Kingston, Havana, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
Issued only a few years after the canal opened, the map shows the region as a world of shipping lanes, with the canal given its own detailed inset.
