About this piece
Zachary Taylor in a bust portrait lettered "Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor", an original steel engraving by T.B. Welch from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. The sheet shows the general in uniform with a dark coat buttoned to the neck and a white stock at the throat, engraved in a soft, velvety mezzotint-like tone against a dark ground.
The portrait carries a facsimile of his signature, "Z. Taylor", engraved beneath the title. The face is drawn with shaded modeling and a calm, direct gaze, with gray hair swept back from the forehead. The title gives his military rank rather than his later office, because Taylor became known to the public as a general before he entered politics.
Zachary Taylor (1784 to 1850) was the twelfth president of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. The portrait was issued in a collection of biographical sketches of prominent Americans, which was the leading American series of engraved portrait biographies in the mid-nineteenth century.
