About this piece

The United States Capitol seen from a distance across open ground, an original steel engraving from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, published in New York by A.J. Johnson in 1872. The plate is lettered "United States Capitol" beneath the image, with the copyright notice in small type below the margin.

The view shows the whole building at a distance: the great cast-iron dome at the center with its lantern and statue, the colonnaded central block with its pediment, and the long wings of the Senate and the House on either side, with steps rising to the porticos. The foreground is open ground crossed by many small figures in fashionable dress, with a horse-drawn carriage at left and strollers scattered across the lawn. The sky is full of heavy clouds, engraved with close line work.

The Capitol's present dome was finished in the 1860s during the Civil War, so the plate shows the building as it looked in the early 1870s.
