About this piece
"The Cotillion, a Belle of the Older Time," a color print after the American illustrator Howard Chandler Christy, from the portfolio Thirty Favorite Paintings by Leading American Artists, published by P. F. Collier & Sons in 1908. The title and the artist's name are lettered by hand at the foot of the sheet, and the artist's signature appears in the image.
The image shows a young woman standing in a full gray gown with short sleeves and a low neckline, wearing a large dark hat with a bow and a brown scarf drawn over her arms, with a folded fan at her breast and a long tasseled sash. The skirt is drawn in sweeping charcoal-like strokes, with the color confined to the brown scarf and the shading of the hat, and the figure fades into the plain cream paper at the edges.
Christy (1872 to 1952) was one of the leading American illustrators of the early twentieth century, and his idealized young women, the "Christy Girl," made him a household name. The title looks back to the social world of an earlier generation.
