About this piece
The French colonies of the West Indies in an original engraved map with hand color, from the Grand Atlas Departemental de la France, de l'Algerie et des colonies by H. Fisquet, published in Paris by A. Le Vasseur and Librairie Abel Pilon et Cie in 1876. The sheet is numbered "N 98" at the top and titled "Carte des Colonies Francaises aux Antilles".
The map covers the Greater and Lesser Antilles under the "Mer des Antilles" and the Atlantic, together with the north coast of South America, lettered "Amerique Meridionale", down to the Guianas and Brazil. Jamaica is tinted yellow at the upper left, and French, English, Spanish, Dutch and Danish possessions are distinguished by color. A table at the upper right, headed "Tableau indiquant les possessions des puissances europeennes", lists the islands held by each power, from Saint-Barthelemy, Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe to Martinique and French Guiana. The Guianas are colored in blocks of pink, green and blue, and a scale of leagues and kilometers is given at the foot.
The plate belongs to an atlas that set out the French departments alongside Algeria and the overseas colonies, and it records French holdings in the Caribbean in the 1870s.
