About this piece

Grenada on a copper-engraved map by John Thomson, published in Edinburgh in 1810, with original outline color. The title "Grenada" is lettered in a red-framed panel at the upper right, with a scale of British miles and a compass rose below the island.

The island is drawn with its mountainous spine in fine hachuring and shaded sea along the coast. The old French parish divisions are named in capitals across the island: Quartier de Grand Marquis, Quartier du Megrin and Quartier de Basse Terre among them, with colored lines marking the boundaries between them. Bays and points are lettered all around the coast, among them La Grande Baye along the southern shore, and and streams run down from the central ridge. A yellow border carries the latitude and longitude.

Grenada had been French before it passed to Britain, and the French place names on the map still record that earlier period.
