About this piece
Indianische Kultur I, an original chromolithograph of Native American tools, weapons and regalia from Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon, printed by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig and dated 1908. The plate is lettered "Meyers Konv.-Lexikon, 6. Aufl." at the lower left and "Zum Artikel 'Indianer'" at the lower right, with the title across the top.
Objects are packed together into a tall composition. At the center rises a carved and painted totem pole with stacked animal and human figures in red, black and white. To the left stand a round painted shield, a bow and quivers, lances and a beaded and fringed bag. To the right are lances and arrows with feathered fletching, a feathered headdress with bells and a ring of red and white plumes, and a fringed garment. At the foot are a long spoon or ladle and a decorated bowl, with a tobacco pipe and clubs between the weapons.
The sheet is a typical illustration from the German encyclopedias of the period, showing objects from different regions, here the Northwest Coast and the Plains, assembled on one page to illustrate the entry on the Indians of North America.
