About this piece
A camp among stone ruins, an original tinted lithograph from the Pacific Railroad Surveys. The caption reads "Bivouac, Jan. 26". The header reads "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys, 35th Parallel" and the sheet is marked Itinerary, with "T. Sinclair's lith. Phila." at lower right.
Three men sit around a small fire in the lower left, one cutting something with a knife, with gourds or water vessels laid on the ground beside them and a group of horses and mules standing behind them. A tall tower of stacked stones rises at the center of the sheet, flanked by massive tilted slabs and rounded rock masses, and a small second camp can be seen at the far left under a pine. A bush at the center catches the firelight. The tints are warm ochre and gray against a pale blue sky.
The date in the caption places the camp during the winter march of the 35th parallel survey under Lieutenant Whipple. The sheet comes from Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.
