About this piece
A composite sheet of the British islands of the West Indies and Bermuda, attributed to the Homann firm of Nuremberg and printed in Latin and German. The title, set in an ornate cartouche at the upper right, reads "Dominia Anglorum in praecipuis Insulis Americae ut sunt Insula S. Christophori, Antegoa, Iamaica, Barbados, nec non Insulae Bermudes vel Sommers dictae", with the German, "Die Englische Colonie-Lander auf den Insuln von America".
Five island maps are placed in colored borders around the title. St. Christopher (St. Kitts) is at the upper left, Antigua ("Insula Antego") fills the left-center, Bermuda ("Insula Bermudos") runs along the lower left, Barbados is at the right, drawn with its parishes in colored outline, and Jamaica lies along the foot. Each island has its own compass, scale of English miles and legend, and several are accompanied by columns of descriptive text in the margins.
The sheet shows the English colonies of the Caribbean and the Atlantic in a single view. The Homann firm, founded by Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg about 1702, became the most important map publisher in Germany in the eighteenth century and was continued after his death in 1724 as Homann Heirs.
