About this piece
The Virgin Islands with insets of nine other Caribbean islands, an original copper engraving by Rigobert Bonne from the Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes (Raynal), published in 1787. The title cartouche reads "Supplément pour les Isles Antilles, extrait des Cartes Angloises, par Mr. Bonne Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine", with a scale beneath it.
The upper third of the sheet is a map headed "Les Isles Vierges", running from Puerto Rico on the left past Vieques, St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola and Virgin Gorda to Anegada, with St. Croix, St. Martin and Anguilla shown at the right. Below it, nine small framed maps fill the lower part of the sheet in three rows: Barbuda ("I. de la Barboude"), St. Christopher ("I. St Christophe"), Antigua ("I. Antigoa"), Dominica, St. Lucia, Barbados ("I. de la Barbade"), St. Vincent, Grenada ("I. de la Grenade") and Tobago ("I. de Tabago"). Each shows coastal soundings and place names.
Bonne (1727 to 1794) succeeded Bellin as Royal Hydrographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in 1773. The sheet gathers the smaller Antilles that the large Atlas maps had no room for.
