About this piece
Village of St. Hyacinthe, County of St. Hyacinthe, a hand-colored lithograph of about 1830 drawn by R. S. M. Bouchette and printed by Day and Haghe, lithographers to the King, London. The title and the county line are lettered below the image, with the artist's credit at the lower left and the printer's line at the lower right.
The view looks across a grassy bank to a wide river, where a wooden bridge on stone piers runs from the near shore to the village. Houses with white walls and gabled roofs line the water at the right, a church spire stands out in the middle of the town, and larger buildings and factory stacks show beyond. In the foreground two figures walk along the bank near the bridge, a man in red stands with a staff at the right, and a small boat sits on the water. Low hills and a pale sky with broken cloud close the distance.
Saint-Hyacinthe stands on the Yamaska River in Lower Canada, east of Montreal, and the view shows it as a river village of mills and farms in the 1830s.
