About this piece

The Rocky Mountains seen across a prairie river, an original steel engraving published in New York by D. Appleton and Co., with the plate title "The Rocky Mountains" and a copyright notice engraved beneath the image. The date is given as 1873, and the engraver's name is lettered at the lower right.

The view opens across the broad, shallow stream in the foreground, where a few figures and horses stand in the water or on the bank. A tall cottonwood and other trees shade the near bank, a pair of tipis stand among them, and the plain runs back to a long line of dim hills. At the far horizon a snow-capped peak rises above the range.

The sheet belongs to the group of American landscape engravings that Appleton issued in these years for readers in the East, who knew the plains and the Rockies from such prints. The engraver named in the old description is R. Hinshelwood.
