About this piece

The Mexican port of Veracruz seen from the Gulf, an original steel engraving from Louis Énault's L'Amérique centrale et méridionale, published in Paris in 1867. The plate is lettered "Veracruz", drawn by Lebreton and engraved by Outhwaite, with the printer's line of Chardon.

Rough water fills the foreground, where a rowing boat pitches among the waves and a dismasted or wrecked sailing ship lies on the left. A lighthouse and a fortified quay stand at the right, with a flag flying above them, and other ships lie at anchor in the middle distance. The low town of towers and domes stretches along the shore, and a volcanic cone with a plume of smoke rises behind it above the hills.

Veracruz was the principal Mexican port on the Gulf and the usual landing for visitors coming from Europe. The plate was made for the French edition of Énault's travel account, written for readers interested in the lands of Latin America.
