About this piece
The eastern United States in two sheets, from an 1882 atlas published by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. The pair is titled "The United States of North America: Atlantic States and Valley of the Mississippi (in two sheets)". The color is applied in outline by region, in pink, yellow, green and buff.
The right-hand sheet, headed "Atlantic States", covers the coast from New England to Florida, with the Appalachians shown in hachures and the Great Lakes at the top left. An inset of Florida occupies the lower right corner. The left-hand sheet, headed "The United States, Valley of the Mississippi", reaches from the Mississippi valley west across the plains. Its state and territorial boundaries are drawn in color, and the dense net of railroads covers the Midwest and the South. The Indian Territory appears in red on the left edge, and the lower course of the Mississippi reaches the Gulf of Mexico at the bottom of the sheet.
The maps show the country as it stood in 1882, with railroads already drawn across the Midwest and the plains states.
