About this piece
Oregon in 1888, an original atlas map from Rand, McNally & Co.'s Improved Indexed Business Atlas and Shippers Guide, with the lettering "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Oregon" along the top margin and page numbers 552 and 553 in the upper corners.
The state is shown with its counties, including Multnomah, Marion, Lane, Jackson, Umatilla, Baker and Wasco, each marked by name across the sheet, and with the Pacific Ocean along the left edge. Railroads are traced in red and blue, among them the line south from Portland through the Willamette Valley and the line of the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company following the Columbia River east toward Idaho. Two Native American reservations are lettered on the sheet: the Warm Spring Indian Reservation and the Klamath Indian Reservation. The Cascade range, the Columbia River and Crater Lake are shown, and the towns include Portland, Salem, Astoria, Eugene, Albany and The Dalles.
Oregon had been a state since 1859, and the map shows it in the 1880s, when the railroads were opening its farming country and tying it to the rest of the nation.
