About this piece
The 50 United States of America, an original pictorial map drawn by Lorin Thompson and published by the General Foods Corporation in 1960. It is printed in color and issued as a self-folding sheet, measuring about 63 by 45 cm, with the cover title "Election Map and 1960 Presidential Fact Sheet."
The map presents the country as a richly colored landscape with the states lettered across it. Historical and economic symbols fill each region: presidents' portraits, Native American figures, covered wagons, a railroad train, farms, cattle, oil derricks, factories, the White House and the Alamo, with a mushroom cloud in the Southwest. A gold-framed porthole at the right carries the title "The 50 United States of America." Two inset maps at the lower left show Alaska, marked "49th," and Hawaii, marked "50th," each with a small flag, noting the last two states admitted to the Union.
On the verso are a list of the past presidents, portraits of the two 1960 candidates, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, an election scoreboard, and a key to the 54 illustrations on the front. The sheet was a promotion given free with the purchase of Gravy Train dog food.
