About this piece
"The Inside of a House, in Oonalashka", an original copper engraving drawn by Webber and engraved by Walker, published "as the Act directs" by Harrison and Co. on 1 October 1784. It shows the interior of a dwelling on Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands, spelled Oonalashka in the period.
The view looks across a large room under a heavy timber roof, with an opening in the top that lets in light. Along the sides, partitioned sleeping places are hung with woven mats, and dried fish are strung at the left. Families are gathered in the compartments: a mother nurses a child at the center, others sit on the platforms at the right, and another figure sits near a cradle at the left. A standing figure in a woven garment faces the room, and a figure climbs a post toward the upper level at the center, with shelves holding stores behind. Boxes and implements lie on the earth floor.
The date places the print just after Cook's third voyage, and John Webber was the artist who accompanied that expedition.
