About this piece
The Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies, an original copper-engraved map with hand-colored outlines, dated 1802 and attributed to Tardieu. The title is boxed at the upper right: "Carte du Golfe du Mexique et des Isles Antilles".
The Gulf of Mexico forms the center of the sheet, ringed by the coast of Florida, here "Floride", along the top, the Texas and Mexican shore at the left, and the Yucatán peninsula and Central America at the lower left. Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico are drawn along the middle, the Bahamas and the Tropic of Cancer run across the upper right, and the Lesser Antilles curve down toward the South American coast, which is lettered "Amérique Méridionale", at the bottom. Rivers, coastal towns and small islands are named throughout, and the Pacific, "Mer Pacifique", appears at the left edge.
Tables of leagues and miles fill the lower left corner, and the map is set within a ruled border with meridians measured from Paris.
