About this piece
The United States, Mexico and the Caribbean on a map titled "Verein-Staaten von Nord-America, Mexico, Yucatan u.a.", from Stielers Handatlas, published by Justus Perthes in Gotha in 1865. The sheet is an engraving with outline color, and the imprint "Gotha: Justus Perthes 1865" appears at the foot.
The map covers the country from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic and shows the border with British North America tinted along the top, the states in blue, pink and green outline, and the western territories in broad outline. Mexico and the Yucatan peninsula fill the lower half, the Gulf of Mexico is lettered "Golf von Mexico", and Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and the Bahamas, labeled "Bahama Inseln" and "Karaibisches Meer", appear at the right. An inset at the lower left, titled "Plateau von Mexico", shows the area around Mexico City on a larger scale. A key at the right lists the states of New England, and the scale is printed at the lower right.
Stielers Handatlas, named after Adolf Stieler (1775 to 1836), was the leading German world atlas of the later nineteenth century. Published by Justus Perthes of Gotha, it went through ten editions from 1816 to 1945.
