About this piece
The United States on a hand-colored map titled "Etats-Unis", published in Paris by J. Migeon around 1875. The sheet is an engraving with the states tinted in pink, blue, yellow and green, framed by a yellow border, with a small vignette of Washington at the lower left.
The map covers the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, with the northern part of Mexico and Cuba at the foot. The states and territories of the West are drawn with the mountain ranges shaded in dark hachures, among them the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades, and the extensive railway network that had been established by the time of the map is clearly illustrated across the East and Midwest. Indian Territory is named in the south, and the Great Lakes and Mississippi system are drawn prominently. The oval vignette shows a view of Washington, labeled below it, as a decorative device.
Migeon was a late nineteenth century map publisher based in Paris. The sheet shows the country in the years of rapid western railroad building.
