About this piece
The West Indies and Central America, an original map from Lowry's Table Atlas, constructed and engraved from the most recent authorities, by J.W. Lowry, dated 1852. The sheet is printed in black, with the coast of Central America and the island coastlines washed in orange, and carries the Chapman and Hall, London, imprint at the foot.
The title is lettered across the Gulf of Mexico at the upper left. The map covers the Caribbean from the Florida peninsula and the Bahamas to the Lesser Antilles, with Cuba, Hayti and Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Leeward Islands all named, and the coasts of Yucatan and Central America at left and the north coast of South America at the foot. A larger-scale inset in the upper right corner shows Jamaica, lettered "Jamaica on Scale D." Harbors, headlands, reefs and small cays are lettered closely along every coast.
The sheet shows the region as it stood in 1852, with the European colonial possessions still intact. A scale of English miles and a graticule of longitude from west are printed at the bottom.
