About this piece
The western United States from Denver to the Pacific, an original color lithograph issued by Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago in 1899 as a double-page sheet, numbered 18 and 19, in the firm's indexed atlas. The side margin carries the lettering "Rand, McNally & Co's New Commercial Map, Denver to Pacific Coast." The outline is printed in black with the colors printed over it, not applied by hand.
The sheet covers the whole western third of the country: Washington and Oregon in the northwest, California down the coast, and Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, each state or territory in its own pastel tint. British Columbia and the Canadian Northwest fill the top margin, and the Rio Grande frontier appears at the lower right. Arizona and New Mexico are still shown as territories. Mountain ranges are modeled in hachured relief, and Indian reservations are named and outlined, among them the Colville and Yakima in Washington, Pyramid Lake and Walker River in Nevada, and the Navajo, Hopi and San Carlos lands of Arizona and New Mexico.
Rand McNally was by the 1890s one of the leading map publishers in the United States, and this commercial map, with its railway lines and mining and reservation place names, belongs to the railroad cartography for which the firm was known.
