About this piece
Western United States and northern Mexico, a sheet from Stieler's Hand-Atlas published by Justus Perthes of Gotha, circa 1879. The sheet is one of a six-sheet series on the United States, and its title block reads "Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-Amerika in 6 Blättern im Maasstabe von 1:3,700000. Von A. Petermann", with the scale and a key to boundaries and signs beneath. The imprint "Gotha: Justus Perthes" runs along the bottom margin.
The map covers California and Lower California, with the Pacific lettered "Grosser Ocean" and the Gulf of California to the east. Arizona and New Mexico fill the center of the sheet, Colorado appears at the top, and the northern states of Mexico run along the lower edge. Relief is shown by hachures with soft green and ochre tinting on the uplands, and the rivers, trails, boundary lines and settlements of the Southwest are drawn in fine detail.
The date places the sheet shortly after the creation of Arizona Territory and before either Arizona or New Mexico was a state.
