About this piece
A map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, titled "Johnson's Virginia, Delaware, Maryland & West Virginia," from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, published in New York by A.J. Johnson in 1872. The sheet is a color-printed map in a decorative chain-pattern border, with page numbers 46 and 47 in the upper corners.
The four states are divided into counties tinted in pink, green and yellow, with Virginia and West Virginia filling the center, Maryland and Delaware at the upper right, and the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic coast along the east. The Appalachian ridges are shown by shading in the west, the rivers draining to the Chesapeake are drawn in detail, and railways and towns are lettered across the sheet. Part of Pennsylvania and New Jersey sits at the top, Ohio and Kentucky at the left and the northern edge of North Carolina and Tennessee at the foot. A blue line marks the steamer route off the coast. The title and the imprint of A.J. Johnson are at the upper left.
West Virginia had been a state only since 1863, and the sheet shows it with its county structure alongside Virginia.
