About this piece
The Windward or South Caribbean Islands together with British, Dutch and French Guiana, an original antique map from The Imperial Atlas of Modern Geography, published by W. G. Blackie in 1859. The engraved sheet carries colored boundary lines.
Two maps share the sheet. On the left, the southern Lesser Antilles are strung out across the "North Atlantic Ocean" and the "Caribbean Sea," from Martinique at the top down through St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Barbados and Grenada, with Trinidad and the Gulf of Paria inset at the lower left. Coastal towns, bays and anchorages are lettered around each island, and a key distinguishes British from French possessions. The title "The Windward or South Caribbean Islands" sits at the lower right of this half.
On the right, the Guiana coast of South America is shown with the heading "British, Dutch, and French Guiana." Rivers, mountain ranges and the colored territorial boundaries run inland from the Atlantic shore toward the Brazilian frontier.
The Windward Islands are the southern, generally larger group of the Lesser Antilles, lying south of the Leeward Islands. The name was also applied to a British colony that existed from 1833 to 1960.
