About this piece
An Andean traveler in the mountains, an original hand-colored engraving from J. Boelen's account of a voyage to the east and west coasts of South America, Reize naar de oost-en westkust van Zuid-Amerika, published in 1835. The Dutch caption reads "Indiaan van Zuid-Amerika, zich op reis over het gebergte bevindende" ("Indian of South America, traveling across the mountains").
A single man stands facing the viewer in a broad-brimmed straw hat with a yellow band, a striped poncho in blue, yellow and black, a checked waistband, dark knee breeches and white stockings above flat leather sandals. A long coiled rope is slung over one shoulder. Pale peaks and snow are sketched behind him in light gray-blue, and the ground is lightly shaded. The engraver's signature appears at the lower right.
The plate is a costume figure from a Dutch travel narrative of the coasts of South America, and it shows the clothing of the Andean traveler as a European artist of the 1830s recorded it.
