About this piece
Indigenous figures in the open country of South America, a hand-colored aquatint with etched outlines by D. K. Bonatti, from Giulio Ferrario's Il Costume Antico e Moderno, published in Milan. The sheet is printed on wove paper and signed "D. K. Bonatti inc." at the lower right.
Four men gather on a patch of green ground in the foreground. All wear brightly striped ponchos or wraps and brimmed felt caps. One stands in the center with an axe over his shoulder, balancing a long pole against it, while two sit and one lies on the ground, with a knife or tool in his hand. At the left a fire burns with a piece of meat roasting on a spit, and at the right a large two-wheeled cart with a woven or hide cover stands on the bank. A second cart can be seen in the distance, and a town with domes and towers lies beyond the water.
Ferrario's work, issued in Milan in 17 volumes in its first issue, collected costume plates from every part of the world, with the American volumes drawing on travelers' accounts.
