About this piece

To-Ka-Con, a Yankton Sioux chief, in a large hand-colored lithograph from Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in 1836. The plate is lettered "To-Ka-Con a Sioux Chief" with the publisher's imprint and the copyright notice beneath.

The portrait is a bust: a man in three-quarter view wearing a feathered headdress with dark and red-tipped feathers, beaded earrings and a double necklace of blue and white beads. His face is painted red, and a deerskin shirt with broad beaded bands on the sleeves and a green-fringed edge covers his shoulders. He holds a saber with a brass hilt across his chest. The color is applied by hand over the lithographed image and the sheet has wide margins.

The portrait derives from the Indian Gallery of paintings assembled by the Superintendent of Indian Trade, and the History of the Indian Tribes of North America became the best-known portfolio of portraits of leading Native American figures of the period.
