About this piece
A Kaw warrior, an original hand-colored print dated 1843 from the Histoire Naturelle de l'Homme comprenant des recherches sur l'influence des agens physiques et moraux (..) by J. C. Prichard. The caption reads "Meach-O-Shin-Gaw. (Le Petit Ours-blanc) Guerrier Konza".
The sitter is shown as a bust portrait in three-quarter profile. His head is shaved except for a tall roach of feathers and hair, with a red-tinted feather ornament at the crown and two long braids hanging beside the face. He wears a large round silver gorget on a necklace of beads, an armband, and a red-pink blanket wrapped across the shoulders, and he grips a knife in one hand. The skin is tinted warm brown, with painted designs on the face and tattoo marks on the chest and arms, and the background is left blank.
The Kaw, also known as the Kansa or Konza, are a Native American people who lived on the plains in what is now Kansas, and the nation today is federally recognized in Oklahoma. The French caption renders the name as "Konza".
