About this piece
Virginia in c.1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red. The running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Virginia" appears across the top between atlas page numbers 184 and 185, and the title "Virginia" is lettered boldly at the upper left.
The whole state is shown, from the mountain counties in the southwest through the Shenandoah valley to the tidewater and the Chesapeake Bay at the right. The ridges of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains are hachured across the west, and the rivers flow east to the bay. Washington is marked at the head of the Potomac near the northern border, and the Delmarva peninsula appears at the far right. West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky are lettered at the borders.
The sheet shows the state in the decades after the Civil War, when the railroads running along the valleys and to the ports of the Chesapeake Bay were rebuilding its trade.
