About this piece

Indigenous people from the neighborhood of Quebec, an original steel engraving by Lemaitre from a set of small Canadian plates made in France around 1850. The sheet is headed "Canada" and titled "Indiens des Environs de Québec," with the note "d'après les dessins de la collection de Mr. A. Vattemare" and the engraver's credit, "Lemaitre direxit," in the lower margin.

Five standing figures are placed across a snowy ground in front of a pale wooded background. Two men at the left wear feathered hats, fringed and banded coats, and leggings with ornamented moccasins; one has his arms folded. At the center, a woman with long loose hair is wrapped in a blanket coat. Next to her a man in a cap and a belted coat holds a long rifle and wears snowshoes, and at the right another man in a feathered headdress and a coat with a decorated sash holds a snowshoe in one hand. The figures are modeled with fine hatching, and the plate number is printed faintly in the upper right.

The plate is based on drawings from the collection of Alexandre Vattemare. The print does not name the people shown.
