About this piece

Inuit of the Labrador coast, an original hand-colored engraving titled "Esquimaux Indians of the Coast of Labrador, Communicated by a Moravian Missionary", published in London by G. Jones on 17 October 1812, as the imprint reads "as the Act directs".

Two figures in hooded sealskin parkas, trousers and tall boots stand on a grassy foreshore in front of the water. The man at the left holds a long spear and a bow, with a dog at his feet. The woman beside him carries a child in the hood of her parka and holds a fish, while a second small child runs at her side. A rocky headland rises behind them across the water. The hand coloring picks out the browns and grays of the clothing and the bright beaded headband of the woman.

The Moravian Church maintained missions among the Inuit of the Labrador coast, and the title credits the information for the print to one of its missionaries.
