About this piece
Kilborn's Mills, Stanstead, L.C. Canada and the United States Settlements, a hand-colored lithograph sketched by Colonel Bouchette and printed by W. Day, lithographer to the King, London. The title is lettered below the image with the line "South of the Province Line, Lat. 45 N.," and the sheet carries the credit for the lithographer on stone at the lower left.
The view looks down a dirt road that runs from the foreground along a river toward a cluster of white farm buildings and mills in a green valley. Three travelers in the road, two men and a woman, walk toward the village beside a split-rail fence, with stone walls and fields climbing the wooded hillside at the left and blue hills in the distance. Small notes in the margins at either side of the image record the position of the line between Lower Canada and the United States.
Stanstead lies on the 45th parallel in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, so the village and the American settlements beyond it face one another across the boundary, which the title marks by its latitude.
