About this piece

Winter quarters on the Hayes River and the house of Montagu, a copperplate engraving of 1757 from the Histoire Générale des Voyages (Tome XV, No. X), with two scenes on one sheet and a pencil note reading "Canada".

The upper scene is lettered "Quartier d'Hyver dans la Riviere de Hayes". Two tall-masted ships lie frozen in among broken ice and snowy banks, flanked by spruce trees. The lower scene, "Maison de Montagu", shows a log house with a snow-covered roof at the left, with figures standing before its door and smoke rising from the chimney, while a cluster of smoking tents or wigwams appears farther back among the evergreens.

Both views come from accounts of the voyages into Hudson Bay, where ships wintered at the mouth of rivers such as the Hayes. The engraving shows the European and Native encampments of the fur-trade country as the compilers of the Voyages imagined them.
