About this piece
Martinique in a copper-engraved map titled "Isle de la Martinique", from Nicolas de Fer's Atlas Curieux, published in Paris in 1704 and dated 1704 in the cartouche. The sheet is an original engraving with hand color. The title cartouche gives the Paris imprint of de Fer.
The island is drawn with east at the top, so that the Atlantic, lettered "Ocean sous nom de Mer du Nord", lies along the upper edge and "Mer des Caribes" at the foot. Relief is shown in pictorial hills and mountains, with woods, rivers, bays and offshore islets, and settlements and forts are marked along the coast. An extensive numbered key at lower right lists more than sixty places, including towns, churches, forts and anchorages. A compass rose marks the orientation at upper right, and a scale of leagues and the latitude are given along the lower margin.
The sheet is numbered "129" at the upper right corner. It shows the French colony at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
