About this piece
New England on a large lithographed sheet, Johnson's New England, published by Johnson and Browning in 1861 and printed with the delicate outline color typical of Johnson atlas maps. The title cartouche at lower right reads "Johnson's New England, by Johnson & Browning".
The map covers Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, with the states tinted in contrasting pink, green and yellow and counties outlined within them. Railroads and towns are laid across the whole region, from Long Island Sound and Cape Cod to the Canadian border, with adjoining parts of New York and Canada at the left and top. Four vignettes fill the corners: Niagara suspension bridge at upper left, and views of the observatories at Yale, Amherst and Cambridge, together with the onetime home of Daniel Webster, along the lower and right margins. The sheet is enclosed in a decorative chain-link border.
Johnson was among the better American mapmakers of the nineteenth century and was known for keeping its maps current with the changes then under way. An 1861 date places this sheet on the eve of the Civil War.
