About this piece

Three large school plates of the Dutch West Indies, issued around 1910 by the firm of Kleynenberg as part of an educational series of 170 plates. They are numbered 151 to 153 and are printed in black and white from enlarged photographs, apparently taken from older photographs or glass slides, intended to show the living conditions in the Dutch colonies.

One plate, lettered "Fort landing op Saba", shows a small white building at the foot of a steep rocky slope with boats drawn up on the shore. Another, "Landingsplaats op St. Eustatius", looks along a wooded bluff to a pier running into the sea with buildings above it. The third plate carries two images: "Philipsburg. Hoofdplaats van St. Martin", a low spit of land between the bay and a lagoon with hills beyond, and "St. Martin. Back street. Great Bay", a dirt street lined with wooden houses and with people standing in the road.

The plates were made large so that a whole class could study them at once.
