About this piece

West Indian animals on a double plate, an original copper engraving by Romeyn de Hooghe, published by Pieter van der Aa in Leiden in the series Les Indes Orientales et Occidentales et autres lieux, dated about 1708. The plate is signed "R. de Hooghe inv." at the lower center and is printed in black.

The sheet is divided into two panels by a tall ornamental column in the center. Each panel has a ribbon banner at the top reading "West Indische Beesten", and a numbered key in French and Dutch is engraved across the top, naming among others the pelican, the penguin, the Mexican bull and the dog of Mexico. In the left panel a hippo-like beast stands at the center and a large bird perches on a rock at the upper center, with a tall bird and a spotted cat on the ground, and crocodiles and a fish in the foreground. In the right panel a bull-like beast, deer and goat-like animals stand in a group among palms and a tree with large birds.

The scene is a collection of creatures assembled from travelers' reports.
