About this piece

Maiden Rock on the Mississippi River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 from Meyer's Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen. The plate is lettered "Maiden Rock am Mississippi" and carries the imprint "Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Instit. in Hildburghausen" and "Eigenthum d. Verlegers".

Steep limestone cliffs rise at the left from the water's edge, their layered rock faces drawn in fine cross-hatching and the slopes thick with trees. The river bends away to the right between lower bluffs. A small boat with two figures rows in the foreground, a flat raft drifts in the middle of the stream, and snags and drowned trees stand in the shallows. A sky of soft clouds lies above.

The name refers to the well-known bluff on Lake Pepin in what is now Wisconsin, which is associated in regional tradition with a Native American legend.
