About this piece
Black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), an original color-printed bird plate from Svenska Fåglar efter Naturen och på Stenritade by Magnus von Wright, in an edition dated 1929. The artist's signature, "W:v Wright del.", appears at the lower right of the image.
The plate shows a single young bird in profile, standing on a pale shelf of rock. The gray mantle, the dark bar across the nape, the dark smudge behind the eye and the black-tipped tail mark it as a juvenile, and the printed caption beneath reads "Rissa tridactyla Lin." with the Swedish description "Tretåig mås, ung fågel" (three-toed gull, young bird). The soft, restrained coloring is set against a plain cream ground, with no landscape beyond the rock.
Magnus von Wright (1805 to 1868) was a Finnish artist and taxidermist, and with his brothers Wilhelm and Ferdinand produced some of the most admired bird illustrations of the Nordic countries. The kittiwake itself breeds around the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific, including the shores of Canada and Alaska.
