About this piece
The United States, Central America and the West Indies on a German map titled "Westindien, Mittelamerica und Vereinigte Staten", from H. Kiepert's Kleiner Atlas der Neueren Geographie fur Schule und Haus, published in Berlin by Dietrich Reimer, c. 1870. The sheet is printed in black with colored outlines, with the title and a color key at lower left.
The main map shows the whole of the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with the states and territories outlined, the western territories lettered in German and Mexico, Central America and Cuba across the foot of the sheet, with the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean lettered in German. A large inset at right is titled "Die nordostlichen Union-Staaten" and shows the northeastern states, from Pennsylvania to New England, on a larger scale. A key at lower left explains the colors used for the different countries and states.
Heinrich Kiepert (1818 to 1899) was a German geographer. This is the German-language view of the United States for a European classroom, with place names in the German forms.
