About this piece
The island of Saint Christopher, or St. Kitts, in the Leeward Islands, titled "Carte de l'Isle de St. Christophe", an original copper engraving by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin with hand outline color, published around 1765. The sheet comes from Le Petit Atlas Maritime and is numbered "Tome I. N° 83" at the upper right.
The island is drawn in plan, long and narrow with a thin southeastern peninsula, with the central mountain range shown as a ridge of brown hachures. Coastal parishes and settlements are named around the shore, with capes, bays and anchorages lettered along the coast, and the interior is crossed by the lines of the parishes. The title is set in a rococo cartouche at the upper right, framed by leaves and flowers in color, and a second cartouche at the lower left holds the scale in "lieues communes de France". A diagonal line marks the meridian.
St. Kitts was a major sugar island that was divided between French and English settlers in the seventeenth century, and the chart shows the island before the final French loss in 1763 faded from use.
