About this piece

John Tyler, tenth president of the United States, an original steel engraved portrait of c.1865 from The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. The title "John Tyler" is engraved beneath the image, with the sitter's facsimile signature below it.

The portrait shows Tyler to the waist, turned slightly to his left and looking aside, in a dark coat over a vest with a white shirt and black bow-style cravat. The face is rendered in fine engraved line and stipple against a dark ground in which a pale diagonal band suggests a curtain. The engraver and the artist of the original drawing are named in small type under the plate.

John Tyler became tenth president in 1841, serving until 1845, after he was elected vice president on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison in 1840. The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans was a collection of engraved portraits of the nation's public figures, and its steel engravings were reissued in later editions such as this one.
