About this piece

A bird of the North Pacific coast shown under the plate title "Sagmatorrhina Lathami" (Latham's guillemot, as the plate is cataloged), an original large folio lithograph with hand color from Daniel Giraud Elliot's The New and Heretofore Unfigured Species of the Birds of North America. The work was published in New York for the author between 1866 and 1869, with plates lithographed and colored by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia.

A single dark bird with an olive-buff breast and a bright yellow bill stands in profile on a mossy rock ledge, with tufts of coarse grass in the foreground and a soft sky of pink and yellow cloud behind it. The lettering at the lower left reads "Drawn from Nature by J. Wolf, London 1868", and the Bowen & Co. imprint stands at the lower right.

Elliot's folio set life-size figures of birds that Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon had not illustrated, concentrating on species of the American West and the Alaskan and Arctic regions. Joseph Wolf, the London natural history painter, supplied a number of the original drawings.
