About this piece
Three views of Plains Indian life on one sheet, original steel engravings by Lemaitre, engraved in France around 1850 after drawings collected by Alexandre Vattemare. The plates are lettered with the heading "Canada," and the engraver's credit appears below each. The captions along the lower edges are cut off or too faint to read.
The upper plate shows a camp with two large conical lodges, their hide covers painted, with riders in the background. In front, a woman kneels beside a dog and works at the ground while another figure stands near her, and a frame of poles with hanging objects stands at the right. The middle plate shows three men standing in a group in front of the lodges: one wears a fringed hide shirt, carries a decorated lance and has long hair, and the other two, wrapped in robes, hold rifles. Mounted figures ride past in the background. The lower plate shows a buffalo hunt, with a rider drawing a bow as he gallops after a bison and the herd running in the open ground beyond.
The three plates are reproduced as a vertical set from a larger series of North American subjects made for European readers.
